Some days I feel people are too sensitive, and other days I feel that people are not respectful enough. In general, I think much effort is misplaced on using politically correct language than actually becoming knowledgeable about unfamiliar aspects of the world and the people in it.

I have come to that conclusion also, it is not always possible to dance about issues because they are so complex already. If I am blunt in my opinions, it is not out of disrespect for others, but the pure expediency of dealing with the complexities. The ability to be respectful of others opinions requires that they be shared in the first place :)
I know my post was vague; I was mainly referring to people being so easily offended (not realizing that there are times for generalization and bluntness) and at the other end not even considering whether their words or actions could be hurtful.
And I agree - sharing that something is offensive allows the ability to be respectful.
